Remember Michael Cimino? Critics of his overblown "Heaven's Gate" questioned his manipulating the *facts* of the real Johnson County War, then presenting fiction as fact. His response was "One uses history in a very free way." I think that is what has happened here, on almost as grand a scale! Ken Burns has produced a "Heaven's Gate" version of "Jazz."
