A fascinating jazz history web site

Well, it was a stuggle making it through the full jazz series, and disappointing as well. It's too bad jazz is dead. I wonder who goes to the 250+ jazz and ragtime festivals around the world? Oh, well.

Amazingly enough, our local paper, the Minneapolis Star and Tribune, covered a fascinating jazz site that I was not aware of (although maybe others have already seen it. The sad part is that it was provided by their internet reporter, not a music/entertainment reporter.

The web site is http://www.harlem.org by Wayne Bremser. He has taken Art Kane's photo used in "A Great Day in Harlem" to let visitors to the site find out about all of the musicians in the photo. You can click on any portion of the photo to get names of the musicians, and then click on the musician for more extensive information and an associated discussion board, links, albums, etc. You can also browse by performer, timeline, musical style or instrument. There's even a video ot Art Kane discussing the photo. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get that to run on my computer.

I found this web site to be more informative than Burns' series. I've always loved that picture and it was fun to explore it on this web site.
