I think part of the reason that Burns is getting so much heat is that, unlike history books, this is virtually the first 10-part TV documentary every made on the history of jazz, and there is simply nothing else to compare it to.
The next time someone presents this history on TV, it will be considerably easier since the ice will have already been broken. Just think if this were the first general history of say, WWII! Anyone left out of it would be all over the author.
I give Burns credit for sticking his neck out there.
